Totalitarianism deals with both psychological and spiritual problems within a person or people as a collective. Solzhenitsyn brings up several points within his argument to solidify that there are aspects of both psychological degradation but also spiritual uplifting during times of extreme struggle as those who were forced into the camps experienced. He begins Part IV of his The Gulag Archipelago by expressing how many people chose to just kill themselves to save themselves from any further misery in the camps. A good proportion of those sent to the camps chose to end their lives this way because of their feeling of guilt in some way because, as Solzhenitsyn interprets, those who felt a universal sense of innocence did not kill themselves. They felt they had no reason to feel guilty in that they did nothing wrong and that sense of innocence would not be taken from them by the totalitarian regime (pg. 301). This interpretation is spiritual in its root in that those who were faithful to God and knew that they were innocent in the eyes God encouraged them to endure the pain that was inflicted upon them.

Solzhenitsyn later states that those who did not succumb to the rewards of ratting out their fellow men and making sure they survived at the cost of another human being were the most dangerous of all (pg. 308). These individuals were willing to go through their lives in the camp with patience and love for others instead of with hate and fear of being murdered at the hands of the Party. They simply were not afraid of death and that is what made them dangerous to the Party, nothing could be used against them because they were so strong in their belief that this life is only temporary but their souls will live on in the Kingdom of Heaven.

I truly think that psychology and spirituality go hand-in-hand. Someone who is religiously devout and pious will most likely have a sound mind and be able to think clearly about things because God is the ultimate judgement for them in Heaven not what happens on Earth. The most devout Christians are the most dangerous to the regime because nothing can be held against them, it is impossible to hold them down by anything earthly because their ultimate goal is to reach Heaven. This is exactly the point Solzhenitsyn makes in that prison and the camps actually strengthen ones faith in God it does exactly the opposite of what is intended to do, not for everyone but for those who are believers in Christ. He states that he blesses prison for it shaped him into the God-fearing man that he is and solidified his thoughts and beliefs. Therefore, totalitarianism strengthens spirituality and as a result psychology as well for those who are strong in their faith.
